Chocolate Mint is a flavor that I used to loathe simply because chocolate is not a flavor that, back in the day, was well translated into e-liquid form. It would, more often than not, be depicted as the overly sweet, artificial flavoring commonly found in chocolate flavored hard candies and the like. But recently, with flavors like Mint Choco Fusion from the folks at Indigo, France Juice’s Peppered Chocomint, and Velvet Cloud’s Mewlew’s Magic, I have been forced to re-evaluate my stance on chocolate e-liquid and I have indeed been astounded at the rich, creamy creations these and other vendors have managed to create with a strong chocolate component.
So when I got to American E-liquid Store’s Chocolate Mint, I came into it with an open mind and high hopes. My initial concern was centered around how realistic their chocolate flavoring would be, but instead, I was shocked, if not astounded to find an entirely different problem altogether…the mint. This is an area where new vapers commonly get a little confused, but I wasn’t expecting to see something like this from a vendor.
Here’s the thing, menthol is not mint. Menthol is a crystal that, while commonly derived from the peppermint plant, has an entirely different flavor profile. When it comes to the taste, the two are like night and day, and most certainly are not interchangeable, which appears to be what American e-Liquid attempted to do. As a result, instead of creating a chocolate mint juice, they have made a chocolate menthol juice, an entirely different beast altogether. The chocolate, the element of the profile I was initially concerned with is barely noticeable at the lower wattage, due to the intense menthol chill, and only marginally more so once this juice gets up into its sweet spot, just short of 11 watts.
With that kind of heat up against it, the chocolate is given more of a opportunity to present, however, the presentation is that of an artificial, hard candy-like flavor, rather than the smooth, creamy chocolate that I’ve come to expect from a well crafted, high quality juice. As far as throat hit and vapor production are concerned, they are in line with what one might expect from a strong menthol at a 50/50 PG/VG ratio.
